Each of the final four teams remaining in the Region 13C amateur baseball playoffs has drafted a pitcher from one of the seven teams eliminated from the postseason to assist in efforts to qualify for the state tournament.
Top-seeded Luverne, which is 14-2 on the season and finished atop the Gopher League standings, has selected Tyler Maeyaert of the Milroy Irish. The Redbirds open their best-of-three series against the No. 5 seed Windom Pirates Wednesday night in Luverne. The Pirates, who sport a 2024 record of 13-5, drafted Tyler Peterson, also a member of the Milroy Irish. Windom rallied from a game down to knock the Irish out of the playoffs on Sunday.
No. 2 Jackson, which has a season record of 14-3 and took first place in the First Nite League this summer, has selected Tucker Sorenson of the Hadley Buttermakers to help pitch them into the state tournament. The Bulls will host third-seeded Fairmont, also 14-3 this summer, Wednesday night to start their best-of-three series, and the Martins have drafted Paxton Gravlin of the Fox Lake Foxes as an extra pitcher.
Following Wednesday's 7:30 p.m. matchups, Luverne will play at Windom at 2 p.m. Saturday in game two. Jackson and Fairmont will play their game two at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Fairmont. Game threes will be on Sunday afternoon at the high seed.
The two winners of this week's series will qualify for the state tournament and play for seedings. The two losers will meet in a battle for the region's third and final state tourney berth.
