Multiple Luverne Cardinals athletes will compete in the state Class A track and field meet, which will take place Thursday and Friday at St. Michael-Albertville High School.
The Cardinals’ boys and girls teams each finished in first place during the May 30 Section 3A meet, which was hosted in Luverne. Among the standout performers were: Jenna DeBates, who placed first in both the 1600 meters and 3200 meters; Owen Janiszeski, who also won both the 1600 and 3200; Augusta Papik, who was victorious in the 100 meter hurdles and second in the high jump; Ryan Fick, first in the 800 meters; Cassi Chesley, second in the 800 meters; Hannah Sneller, second in the discus; and Reinha John, second in the 300 meter hurdles. The Luverne boys 4x800 relay team also took first place, and the boys 4x400 relay team was second.
Four Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda athletes are also headed to state thanks to their efforts at sectionals: Laiken Farris, who was second in the 1600; Alabama Hoonhorst, second in the discus; Rebecca Cheadle, second in the high jump; and Logan Gass, second in the high jump.
For Southwest Minnesota Christian-Edgerton, Jocelyn Barron finished first in the shot put at sectionals to advance to state. Aiden Schaap was second in the triple jump, and the boys’ 4x400 relay team took first.
Hills-Beaver Creek will have Brynn Bakken competing in both the 100 and 200 meters at state after winning both at sectionals as well as in the long jump, where she took second. The Patriots’ Jackson Gacke also qualified for state by earning a triumph in the discus, and the H-BC girls’ 4x100 relay team also took first.
Ben Dahlin is the lone state meet qualifier for Jackson County Central, as he won the 200 meters and placed second in the 100 meters at last week’s Section 2A meet at Mankato West High School. Windom has four champion performances: Aaden Nauman in the 1600, Kevin Bleess in the long jump and Job Ogeka in the triple jump, as well as the 4×800 relay. Victoria Robillard also qualified for state in the pole vault.
