The Worthington Trojans boys cross county team placed sixth of 16 teams on Saturday at the state Class AA meet at St. Olaf College in Northfield.


The Trojans, who totaled 184 points, had their fastest time from freshman Fanuel Wolday, who came in 31st overall with a time of 17 minutes and .9 seconds. Also competing for Worthington were Mikele Walu, 37th with a time of 17 minutes, 10.22 seconds; Filmon Wolday, 63rd at 17:40.63; Mason Bobb, 66th at 17:42.62; Alec Langerud, 97th at 18:01.51; Ofebka Morke, 103rd at 18:06.12; and Isaac Kinser, 137th at 18:51.93.


Big Lake topped the team standings with 92 points, and Alden Keller of the Breck School was the first individual finisher at 15:53.27. For Worthington, the Section 2AA meet winners, it was the first team trip to state in several decades.


In the state Class A girls meet Saturday, also at Northfield, Luverne finished third as a team with – points and Murray County Central sixth at 165 points. Staples-Motley finished first with a total of 103 points.


Murray County Central’s Amanda Overgaauw, meanwhile, was the individual champion in the girls A race, coming in with a time of 18:09.13. Finishing second and third, respectively, were Luverne’s Tenley Nelson and Jenna DeBates; Nelson finished in 18:47 and DeBates in 19:06.82. MCC’s Ashley Overgaauw was sixth overall at 19:16.22.


Among those qualifying for the meet individually, Windom Area’s Kaylee Walkin led the way, placing 12th overall with a time of 19:37.04.


In the state boys Class A race, Luverne placed ninth and was led by a 15th-place finish from Camden Janiszeski and a 17-place effort from Owen Janiszeski.

In Minnesota 9-man football playoffs, Hills-Beaver Creek took care of Mountain Lake Area, 36-9, on Friday. In Class A action, it was state-number-one ranked Murray County Central 23, Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 8. In Class AA, Pipestone Area edged Jackson County Central 34-28. In Class 3A, Fairmont topped Waseca 27-6.


That sets the stage for multiple state quarterfinal games involving regional teams. Hills-Beaver Creek will take on Renville County West at 7 p.m. Friday at Macalester College in St. Paul. Murray County Central will face Mayer Lutheran at 7 p.m. Friday in Jordan. Pipestone Area will clash with Maple River at 7 p.m. Friday in Hastings, while Fairmont will take on Dassel-Cokato at 11 a.m. Saturday in Prior Lake.

In high school volleyball, Jackson County Central advanced to the state tournament by outlasting Paynesville 3-2 for the Section 3AA title in Marshall. Game scores were 25-27, 25-17, 10-25, 26-24, 15-10. In the Section 3A title match, Minneota knocked out Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 3-0 by game scores of 25-18, 25-14, 25-21.


In quarterfinal state volleyball tourney action, JCC will meet Annandale at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Xcel Center; Marshall will face St. Paul Highland Park at 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Xcel Center.

Meanwhile, in the quarterfinal round of the Iowa state high school football playoffs, it was Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley 50, Sergeant Bluff-Luton 14 and West Lyon 24, Central Lyon/George-Little Rock 7. Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley will meet Solon in a battle of unbeatens at 4 p.m. Saturday at the UNI Dome; West Lyon will face Williamsburg at 1 p.m. Saturday.
