In high school volleyball action Thursday night, Pipestone Area defeated the visiting Worthington Trojans. Game scores were 25-17, 25-14, 19-25, 25-23.
Tarren Spartz had 12 kills and was 13-for-15 at the service line for eight points and three aces to pace the Trojans. Addison Gerber had 27 set assists and was 18-of-19 serving for 12 points and two aces.
Madison Beckmann added nine kills and Ellie Weg six kills for the Trojans, who are now 2-2 this season. Beckmann also contributed six blocks, while Spartz and Brooklyn Scheitel-Taylor both had seven digs.
Elsewhere in high school volleyball, it was: Marshall 3, Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 0; Windom 3, Southwest Minnesota Christian 1; Jackson County Central 3, Spirit Lake, Iowa 1; and Red Rock Central 3, Renville County West 0.
Multiple southwest Minnesota high schools also opened their fall 2021 football seasons on Thursday evening. Final scores include: Redwood Valley 20, Luverne 6; Blue Earth Area 59, Windom Area 0; Maple River 35, Jackson County Central 8; Pipestone Area 43, LeSueur-Henderson 0; Murray County Central 40, MACCRAY 0; Minneota 35, Adrian-Ellsworth 0; Renville County West 26, Westbrook-Walnut Grove 8; and Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 36, Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda 14.
In high school cross country, the Worthington High School boys team placed first Thursday in a triangular meet with Hutchinson and St. Peter.
Ofbeka Morke (17:45), Fanuel Wolday (17:45), Mikele Walu (17:58) and Alec Langerud (17:59) finished first through fourth for the Trojans. Mason Bobb was sixth with a time of 18:43, and the Trojans’ Filmon Wolday was seventh with a clocking of 18:53.
Leading the Worthington girls Thursday was Karissa Bickett, who placed seventh with a time of 24:37. Kenadie Thiner came in at 24:56 and Nicole Wede finished in 24:57.
