The Minnesota Department of Transportation has closed some state highways and a portion of Interstate 90 in South Central Minnesota. Strong winds have continued to create blowing and drifting snow, significantly reducing visibility.
Roads closed include:
Interstate 90 from Luverne to Blue Earth (westbound I-90 from Luverne to the South Dakota border remains open)
Minnesota 60 from Iowa to Mankato
Minnesota 91 from Iowa to the Murray County line
U.S. 59 from Iowa to Fulda
Minnesota 264
Minnesota 30 from the Murray County line to Minnesota 4
Minnesota 4 from Iowa to Minnesota 30
Minnesota 15 from Iowa to Madelia
The road closures are expected until conditions improve later today. MnDOT reminds motorists that it is illegal to travel on a closed road and if a motorist requires rescuing, they are liable for all related rescue costs.
A no-travel advisory has also been issued on several state highways and I-90 in counties that include Freeborn, Faribault, Blue Earth, Brown, Waseca, Nicollet, Le Sueur, Rock, and Sibley.
No travel advised means that the roadway has deteriorated and/or visibility has been reduced to the point that it is very dangerous to travel; there are reports of whiteout conditions; and some weather conditions can be severe enough that road treatments are not effective, and conditions can become life-threatening for stranded travelers.
