Bluejay soccer team sweeps weekend matches

The Minnesota West men's soccer team won both their matches over the weekend and are now just two victories away from a regional championship.

The Bluejays played each of their weekend matches at Trojan Field. They cruised to a 12-0 triumph over Oak Hills Christian College on Saturday afternoon and then defeated Lake Superior 3-1 on Sunday afternoon.

In the Saturday match, Vini Suveendralingam scored five goals and Manuel Alcaron added three more goals. Dario Neves had two goals, and Kaleb Lee and Peer Pekkeriet each had one. Assists were credited to Minnesota West's Pekkeriet, Lee, Mason Bruce, Elijah Kester and Leon Togba. Goalkeeper Eli Robinson recorded a save on the only shot he faced.

On Sunday, Lee scored a Bluejays goal on an assist from Christian Martinez, Pekkeriet scored on an assist from Joenghyeon Han and Alcaron scored on an assist from Prince Lebbi. Robinson made 10 saves against Lake Superior.

Minnesota West is now 5-7-1 on the year. The Bluejays will begin Region 13 play by travelling to Alexandria on Thursday night for a semifinal match at 6:30 p.m. The two teams have met once this season, with the result being a 1-1 tie on Oct. 5. If Minnesota West wins, the Bluejays would play for the Region 13 championship on Sunday at a time and location to be determined.
