The Minnesota West men's and women's basketball teams split a doubleheader at Bismarck State College on Saturday as well as at United Tribes Technical College on Sunday. The Bluejay men went 2-0 on the weekend, while the Lady Jays were 0-2.
In the men's games, the Bluejays recorded a pair of two-point victories, as Minnesota edged Bismarck State 69-67 on Saturday and nipped United Tribes 75-73 on Sunday. The Bluejays improved to 6-1 on the season.
Jiekgoy Wiel led a balanced scoring attack for Minnesota West on Saturday with 16 points, while Zach Hayenga and Zackery Rygg added 14 apiece and Deondre Wallace 12. Henry Counsel pulled down 11 rebounds.
In the Sunday game, the Bluejays once again had balanced scoring as five players reached double digits in points. Rygg led with 16 and was followed by Keion Irvin and Dylan Marshall with 14 each, Wiel with 13 and Counsel with 12. Irvin topped the team in rebounding with 11.
The Lady Jays, meanwhile, are now 4-2 on the season after being defeated by Bismarck State 87-60 and United Tribes 68-63.
Katrina Schutz scored 21 points and Rhea Tucker had 20 points and nine rebounds against Bismarck State. Tucker again topped Minnesota West with 20 points and nine rebounds in Sunday's game. Schutz had 12 points, and Maddie Kamm chipped in with 11.
Next up for both basketball teams are home matchups against Lakes Region State College of North Dakota on Friday night.
