Minnesota West head football coach Jermaine Smith has been named the Minnesota College Athletic Conference (MCAC) Coach of the Year.
Despite facing challenges that would have deterred many, Smith — in his first year with the program -- guided the team to an undefeated regular season before self-reporting an eligibility violation that required the forfeiture of six conference wins. Under Smith’s direction, the Bluejays rose to become the #2-ranked team in the nation. His impactful coaching transformed a program that had been winless the previous season.
However, after discovering several players were ineligible, Minnesota West chose the difficult path of transparency. The forfeitures altered the team’s final record to 0-6 in the MCAC and 0-8 overall, but it showcased Smith’s commitment to integrity and his belief in fostering a program that stands for something beyond the scoreboard, a Minnesota Wesst press release said.
Said Smith in the press release: “I’m incredibly thankful for our dedicated coaching staff and, above all, the young men who have made coaching such a rewarding experience. No matter the challenges, it’s essential to keep fighting and persevering."
With more than 20 years of coaching experience across collegiate and professional football, including roles in the NFL, CFL, and AFL, Smith brought invaluable expertise to Minnesota West. Beyond his football knowledge, his commitment to community service and youth mentorship through his non-profit for at-risk youth reflects his values-driven approach to leadership, the press release continued.
Smith acknowledged the support of his assistant coaches, who have been pivotal in navigating the season’s challenges.
“This year has been remarkable; embarking on a journey to transform our culture has brought tremendous growth and excitement," he said. "I pray that God continues to guide this football program in His likeness. I feel truly blessed to be a Bluejay."
The MCAC also recognized football student-athletes as members of the 2024 All-MCAC Team. Minnesota West All-MCAC Football honorees are: First Team — Elijah Alexander, sophomore quarterback; Marlon Fluker, freshman wide receiver; Josh Noble, sophomore left tackle. Second Team -- Cohl Becker, freshman right guard/right tackle; Deante Porter, sophomore inside linebacker; Justin Spears, freshman free safety; Hunter Grathwohl, freshman running back; Bryce Nutall; freshman outside linebacker. Honorable Mention: Jayvarion Peters, sophomore defensive tackle; Robin Braun, freshman kicker. All-Offensive Line Team: Noble.
