The Minnesota West Bluejay baseball team split a pair of games Sunday in Sioux Falls, edging Western Technical College 9-8 and then falling to Minnesota North College-Rainy River 11-6.

In their first game, Western Tech scored four runs in the top of the second for a 4-1 lead, but Minnesota West rallied with two in the third and two more in the fourth for a 5-4 edge. Western Tech knotted the game in the fifth, but the Bluejays got two in the sixth to go ahead 7-5. The Cavaliers responded with three in the seventh to take an 8-7 advantage, but the Bluejays got the lead back with two in the bottom of that inning and then held on.

Ales Zhao led the Minnesota West offense with three hits and Haruta Endo, Moises Sugasti and Eliecer Gonzalez all had two hits each. The Bluejays were helped by six Western Tech errors.

In game two, it was Minnesota West that made six errors in the field behind starting pitcher Tucker Brandner, who surrendered 10 runs — only two of which were earned. Christian Cortes and Ian Becker each had three hits for the Bluejays and Josh Johnson had two.

Minnesota West, now 5-10 thus far this spring, is scheduled to play a doubleheader Thursday in Norwalk, Iowa against Minnesota North College-Vermillion. It then is slated to host a home twinbill Saturday against Minnesota State of Fergus Falls.
