City council hosting public hearing on 'turnback' project

A public hearing regarding planned work on U.S. 59 will be part of the Worthington City Council meeting scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is proceeding with plans for the reconstruction of U.S. 59 from approximately one-half mile north on Interstate 90 to Minnesota 60 in Worthington. The project includes safety improvements at several intersections, grading and pavement, storm sewer, sanitary sewer and watermain replacement, lighting and sidewalk.

The section of U.S. 59 just south on Interstate 90 to Minnesota 60 will be a jurisdictional transfer – or turnback -- to the City of Worthington after construction. Representatives of MnDOT will present the final layout and answer questions as required by state statute during Monday's public hearing. A public open house about the project is also scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. Monday at Worthington City Hall.

Following the public hearing, city council members are slated to consider a resolution on the final layout for the project.

Also Monday, council members will consider approving a task order with Bolton and Menk in an amount not to exceed $150,000 without prior council approval that will allow Bolton and Menk to provide engineering services to design the new sewer, water mains and connecting services as part of the turnback project. The existing sanitary sewer system and water main serving Oxford Street along with a water main crossing Humiston Avenue have reached their design life and need to be replaced as part of the reconstruction work, which is anticipated in 2027 and 2018.

Among the other items on Monday's council agenda are consideration of a tax abatement for the construction of a two-unit condominium on Cherrywood Lane as well as a tax abatement request for a new 26,000-square-foot retail, showroom, and shop facility.
