Comprehensive plan on Monday's council agenda

The Worthington City Council will consider adopting the city's "Our Worthington 2045" Comprehensive Plan during its meeting Monday night.

The new comprehensive plan is intended to guide growth, policy and decision making over the next 20 years. In accordance with state statute, the Worthington Planning Commission hosted a public hearing regarding its adoption during a Nov. 6 meeting. The commission voted unanimously to recommend adoption of the plan.

The final draft was open to public review prior to the public hearing and sent to Worthington City Council members via email for review on Oct. 11, 2024. Stephanie Falkers with SRF Consulting Group will be in attendance to present the plan prior to council's expected vote on its adoption.

Also Monday, in another item under community development, the council is expected to take action on the future of parking in the city’s downtown plaza. The plaza has regularly been utilized as a parking lot outside of special events since it was constructed. This has led to concerns about the safety of parking in that area, and whether utilizing the area as a parking lot fits with the purpose of the plaza.

The city’s Traffic and Safety Committee discussed the downtown plaza parking during its Oct. 29 meeting and unanimously voted to recommend that the city council prohibit parking at the plaza outside of special events, such as vendors for farmers markets. The committee based this recommendation on safety issues, such as instances of people driving underneath the pavilion structure, as well as the purpose of the plaza. Council is expected to consider that recommendation and take subsequent action.
