Cubs edge Pipestone 1-0 for 2nd amateur baseball win

The Worthington Cubs doubled their win total for the 2024 season on Sunday afternoon by scoring a 1-0 victory on the road in Pipestone.


Tate Gaul and Jake Brandner shared the pitching duties for the Cubs and combined on a shutout while striking out 12 A's hitters. Tommy Lais drove in the lone run of the game in the sixth inning. Lais, Triston Sauerbrei and Logan Huisman each had hits in the game for the Cubs.


Worthington is scheduled to play its next game this Sunday against Fox Lake in Truman.


In other amateur baseball action this past weekend, Fairmont defeated Pipestone 11-3 and Milroy won over Heron Lake, 13-2. Both of the games were on Friday night. On Sunday, it was: Windom 11, Pipestone 0; Luverne 11, Fox Lake 4; Jackson 2, Fox Lake 0; Fairmont 6, Luverne 5; and Windom 6, Hadley 4.


Gopher League standings have Luverne on top at 9 wins and 2 losses in league games. Milroy is 8-3, Hadley is 5-5, Pipestone is 3-8 and Worthington is 2-10.


In the First Nite League, Jackson is out in front with a record of 8-2. Fairmont is 10-3, Windom is 9-3, Lakefield is 4-8 and both Fox Lake and Heron Lake are 2-9.


Other upcoming games this weekend include Hadley at Heron Lake at 2 p.m. Saturday, Heron Lake against Jackson at 1 p.m. Sunday in Luverne, and Jackson at Luverne at 3 p.m. Sunday. The regular season concludes one week later, on July 14.
