Worthington Independent School District 518 has released a public statement that aims to address concerns that have been raised recently about the increased activity of immigration enforcement officers throughout the country with changes in immigration policy.

Says the public statement:

"As educators, we are committed to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for all students. Our schools are places where each student, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion or immigration status, has equitable access to a free education – a right that is fundamental to maintaining the fabric of our society. The beauty of our school district is found in the diverse faces of our students and employees. We value each student’s personal journey, for it is what makes them who they are.

"We want to take a moment to address some concerns that have been raised recently about the increased activity of immigration enforcement officers throughout the country with the change in immigration policy. We understand that these times bring uncertainty and anxiety, and we want to reassure you that the safety, well-being, and support of all our students, staff and families continue to be our top priority.

"We are a close-knit rural community, rich in diversity and united by a shared commitment to helping every child thrive. Our schools are places where all students—regardless of background—should feel safe, valued, and respected. We are dedicated to maintaining an environment where every child has the opportunity to learn and grow without fear.

"Student information, including the immigration status of their family members, will not be shared with anyone. We are bound by Federal and State laws to protect our students’ private information and educational records, and we go above and beyond to ensure that we uphold this commitment to all.

"While it is important that we respect and follow the law, we will also work diligently to protect the rights and privacy of our students. Should immigration officials come to a school, we will ensure they follow the proper legal procedures and documentation, and we will take every step necessary to ensure the safety and dignity of all our children.

"Our school buildings are safe spaces for students and families. We encourage everyone to continue to enjoy being a part of our school culture. Therefore, we urge our families to continue business as usual, such as meeting with teachers and staff and attending programs and events.

"We have placed a large value and efforts on being connected to our students. If you or your family have concerns or need assistance, please reach out to the school or local legal resources. Our counselors and Family and Community Liaisons are here to provide support, answer questions, and help guide you through any challenges. We are a strong community, and together, we will continue to create a welcoming and safe environment for everyone.

"Thank you for your continued trust and partnership as we work together to protect and care for our students."
