Fogelman: Apply now for disaster relief

District 21B Rep. Marj Fogelman is encouraging all Minnesotans who suffered flood damage this year to apply for disaster relief before the Sept. 27 deadline, including individuals who may have assumed they are ineligible.

Federal Emergency Management Agency grants are available to provide individual assistance to residents of 19 Minnesota counties as they recover from water damage suffered last June and July. This includes Blue Earth, Cook, Cottonwood, Faribault, Freeborn, Goodhue, Itasca, Jackson, Lake Le Sueur, Mower, Nicollet, Nobles, Rice, Rock, St. Louis, Steele, Waseca and Watonwan. The assistance can be used to help pay for temporary housing, home repairs and other expenses not covered by insurance.

Fogelman, a Republican from Fulda, indicated a number of individuals may not have realized they are eligible for FEMA funding so have not applied for relief. For instance, Fogelman said FEMA funding is available to renters in apartments and mobile homes, as well as people with insurance. In addition, impacted business owners can apply for low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Residents can apply online for individual assistance at DisasterAssistance.gov or can call 800-621-3362 for more information.
