FORWARD Worthington made its annual award presentations during its Extravaganza event at Worthington Event Center.
The Friend of Education Award was presented by Worthington High School band teacher Mike Thompson to Smith Trucking of Worthington. Thompson noted that, on top of their continued support for the band over the years, Smith Trucking has recently provided cold storage for the school in emergencies. Most recently, the company has provided two substantial monetary donations for the District 518 Wellness Room, which provides basic toiletries, hygiene products, clothing, winter clothing and other basic necessities to students who are in need.
In an email Monday afternoon, District 518 Communications Coordinator Annew Foley praised Smith Trucking fort its "continued support and assistance to the Spirit of Worthington Marching Band for the five past national trips -- Tampa, Atlanta, Cuero, Hollywood and San Diego. Their help to transport the huge amount of band equipment, uniforms, instruments, prop pieces and more has been a huge benefit with their generous donation for each trip saves space and lessens fundraising efforts to keep the transportation local."
Added Foley: "The support for the band is extremely generous. The locations that we have had to march in the parades, bowl games, practice fields and more -- they (Smith Trucking) are amazing at what they do. The San Diego high school we used for practice was near to impossible to get in and out of, and the driver did an outstanding job. (They're) professional, top notch, love our kids, considerate, attend everything the kids do and help cheer on the kids."
FORWARD Worthington Executive Director Jaime Salinas presented Palma Customs of Worthington with the Hospitality Award. Salinas explained that Palma was recognized for its involvement in Worthington's King Turkey Day and Windsurfing Regatta & Music Festival. for which it has provided safe cabs so that people get home safely with free rides.
