The Minnesota Elementary School Principals’ Association (MESPA) announces that Heidi Meyer, principal of Prairie Elementary in Worthington, has been named the recipient of the Southwest Division Leadership Award. This award recognizes Principal Meyer’s exceptional leadership, dedication to fostering collaboration, and commitment to creating an inclusive and welcoming school community.

“There is a tremendous amount of talent and expertise in the staff that I get to work with every day,” Meyer said in a press release. “It is an honor to support and encourage them as they serve our students. Together, we have built a culture of collaboration that transcends beyond grade levels. We are a family.”

Under her leadership, Prairie Elementary has excelled in creating a strong sense of community and family engagement. The school boasts a 95% attendance rate at parent-teacher conferences, a testament to the welcoming environment Meyer and her team have cultivated.

“We believe conferences and special events are so highly attended because we have created a welcoming space for all families and make every effort communicate and involve them, regardless of barriers,” Meyer added.

Meyer’s educational philosophy is rooted in the belief that collaboration is key to both student and staff success. She embraces a shared leadership model, drawing inspiration from educator Robert John Meehan, who said: “The most valuable resource that all teachers have is each other. Without collaboration, our growth is limited to our own perspectives.”

“At Prairie, we’ve created a culture of teamwork that promotes professional growth while fostering a supportive community where diverse perspectives are valued," Meyer said.

In addition to her role as principal, Meyer is also a leader in her local community. She serves on several boards and committees, including the Friends of the Auditorium Committee, Sanford Health Advisory Board, Worthington Chamber Singers, the City of Worthington’s 2045 Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee, and the YMCA Board of Directors (past member). Her leadership and involvement have strengthened partnerships between the school and the broader community, enhancing the opportunities and resources available to students and their families.

This year, Prairie Elementary was named a Minnesota School of Excellence under Meyer’s leadership, further solidifying the school’s reputation for academic achievement and community engagement. Meyer is also an active member of MESPA, serving on the association’s Negotiations Committee, where she works to advocate for principals and promote educational leadership across the state.
