A citation for illegal burning was given Sunday afternoon after the Worthington Fire Department was dispatched for a blaze just east of the city's wastewater treatment plant.
Worthington Fire Department Chief Pat Shorter noted that the fire was illegal in that both a burn ban is currently in place and that materials other than grass and tree branches were being burned. Materials such as shingles and other building materials -- and tires -- are not legal to burn.
The fire caused no injuries, but there was damage to a few viable trees in the area, Shorter said. Significant contributors to the fire were the ongoing dry conditions and strong conditions.
Worthington firefighters also responded earlier Sunday to a fire in the 1500 block of Darling Drive, as a cigarette receptacle that had not be emptied in some time caught fire. "There was nothing really major there," Shorter said.
