Luverne played host to the Minnesota Division II American Legion Baseball Tournament this past weekend, with Wadena topping Morris 14-0 Sunday afternoon in the championship game.
Two southwest Minnesota teams – Jackson and Luverne – competed in the tourney. In opening-round play on Friday, Jackson got four runs in the second to grab a 4-0 lead against Sibley East but wound up losing 5-4 in eight innings. Luverne, meanwhile, went toe to toe against Wadena for 15 innings Friday night before being edged 1-0. Conner Connell threw 7 2/3 innings of shutout relief for Luverne in the contest, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out 16.
On Saturday, Luverne took on Dilworth-Glyndon-Fenton in a consolation-round matchup. Luverne took a 1-0 edge early, but D-G-F eventually scored six runs in the seventh to win 7-1 and eliminate the tournament hosts. Jackson, meanwhile, got two hits apiece from Bryson Powers, Ben Spaeth and Brenan Runge and beat Chatfield 8-6 thanks in part to three big insurance runs in the top of the seventh. D-G-F then beat Jackson 7-6 in the consolation championship game.
In winning its state title, Wadena captured all three of its victories via shutout.
