The Jackson Bulls earned the edge on the Windom Pirates Wednesday night in their Region 13C amateur baseball series to determine the third and final state tournament team from the region, as they earned a 7-1 victory in Jackson in game one of their best-of-three matchup.
The Bulls took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single from Evan Olesen, but the Pirates drew even in the third. Then, in the bottom of the third, Blake Evans connected for an RBI double and Carter Synder contributed a run-scoring single to make it 3-1 Jackson.
In the fifth, Jackson tallied two more runs – making it a 5-1 game – thanks to a two-run single by Chris Gumto. The Bulls tacked on one more in the sixth and then got one more in the eighth on an RBI single from Evans to complete the scoring. With the victory, Jackson improved to 15-5 on the summer, while Windom fell to 13-8.
The Pirates will host the Bulls at 2 p.m. Saturday in game two of their series. If Windom wins, the two teams will play a third and deciding game at 1 p.m. Sunday in Jackson.
Meanwhile, Luverne and Fairmont began their best-of-three playoff series Wednesday night to determine who will be seeded first and second from the region at state. Playing in Luverne, the Redbirds edged the Martins 6-5.
Luverne, now 17-2 this season, will meet the 16-4 Martins at 7:30 p.m. Friday night in Fairmont. Game 3, if needed, will be at 1 p.m. Sunday in Luverne.
