The Worthington Trojans baseball team stayed close to Jackson County Central early on, but the Huskies dominated the later innings and went on to roll past WHS 14-1 Monday at the Middle School Field.
JCC’s Ben Spaeth’s RBI triple gave his team a 1-0 edge in the top of the first inning and the Huskies never trailed in the ballgame. Spaeth came around to score later in the first, and a throwing error on a ball off his bat in the third made it a 3-0 game. A two-run single by Brett Rossow scored Spaeth and Cam Scholten in the fifth to make the score 5-0, JCC.
The Huskies broke the game open further in the sixth with four more runs on just two hits. JCC managed its 14 runs on just seven hits, as they were helped by four Worthington errors. The Trojans, who picked up a total of four hits on the night, got their lone run in the bottom of the sixth on a base hit by Matthias Noble, a double from Cooper McCoy and a sacrifice fly from Tristan Sauerbrei.
Scholten, who picked up the complete-game win on the mound for JCC, crushed a three-run homer in the seventh to cap the scoring. The Trojans are now 0-2 on the season; they’ll play at Marshall on Tuesday.
