Luverne girls fall in first round of state A hockey tourney

South St. Paul took a two-goal lead in the first period and went on to top Luverne, 3-1, in the state Class A girls hockey tournament Wednesday night at the Xcel Center.


Inga Oelerking scored 2:35 into the game for South St. Paul and Eva Beck added a goal at 9:56 for the Packers. Luverne got on the board at 2:49 of the second period when Kamryn Van Batavia scored for the 79th time this season on assists from Peyton Behr and Mallory VanTersch, but South St. Paul netted a goal from Aliyah Danielson a little more than four minutes later.


Packers goalie Delany Norman made 20 saves, while Cardinals netminder Cheyenne Schutz stopped 38 shots. Luverne now plays the River Lakes Stars in a consolation round game today at the TRIA Rink in St. Paul.


Also Wednesday at the state tourney, it was Orono over Mankato East 7-1, Proctor-Hermantown beating Albert Lea 6-2 and Warroad blanking River Lakes 7-0.
