Man in Pipestone County Jail on murder charge

An Edgerton man is in jail on a murder charge following a Saturday incident in which a woman was found dead at an Edgerton residence.

Joseph James Benson, 35, of Edgerton, is in Pipestone County Jail. He has been charged with second-degree murder -- a felony punishable by up to 40 years' imprisonment.

According to a criminal complaint filed Tuesday, deputies with the Pipestone County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a possible domestic assault at the Edgerton residence shortly before noon. The report came from the property owner, who told law enforcement that Benson and his girlfriend were housesitting for her. The property owner stated that she had received a message from Benson indicating that he had killed the woman, according to the complaint.

Benson's first hearing in Pipestone County District Court is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 12.
