Jacari Swinea scored 19 points — all in the second half — but the Worthington Trojans boys basketball team fell just short at home Saturday afternoon against Hutchinson, losing 54-53.
Caleb Meyer scored eight points to lead WHS in the first half as the Trojans trailed 22-15 at the break. Swinea then scored two quick field goals to start the second half and Worthington was able to take a 33-31 on another Swinea bucket, forcing a Hutchinson timeout with 12:40 to go.
Two more points from Swinea made it 35-33 Trojans, but the Tigers went on to score seven consecutive points. WHS, however, would answer with a 6-0 run of its own, with two Swinea free throws putting the Trojans up 41-40 with 7:24 remaining.
Hutchinson would soon inch in front 44-41, but Worthington quickly grabbed the edge right back after a basket from Isaiah Schroeder made it 47-44. A short time later, a Welbaka Morke basket with 3:51 remaining made it 52-50, WHS, but that would be the last lead for the Trojans. WHS had the last shot of the ballgame, but Morke's 3-pointer went off the rim.
Meyer finished with 13 points for Worthington, which is now 2-10. The night before, the Trojans were also defeated at home by Luverne 78-52.
