Freshman Rhea Tucker scored 25 points to lead the Minnesota West Lady Jays basketball team to an 89-45 season-opening victory over Sisseton Wahpeton College on Friday night. Katrina Schutz led the way with 21 points and Tucker added 20 more on Saturday as the Lady Jays topped Sisseton again, 80-72.
In Friday night's win, Minnesota West led 20-7 after the first quarter and 47-19 halftime. Also scoring in double figures besides Tucker were Schutz with 18 points, Maddie Kamm with 13 and Ava Parrish with 11. Tucker and Kamm both also had nine rebounds in the game to lead the team.
On Saturday, the Lady Jays were up by just eight at halftime but extended their lead to 15 after three quarters. Tucker had a huge game on the boards with 19 rebounds. Kamm also contributed 10 points and 15 rebounds.
In men's basketball over the weekend, Minnesota West beat Sisseton Wahpeton College twice by nearly identical scores, as the Bluejays won 93-67 on Friday and 91-67 on Saturday.
Zackery Rygg had a team-best 22 points for Minnesota West on Friday, and Calvin Flood chipped in with 18 points. Karasharo Ojullo pulled down nine rebounds for the Jays, who led 53-27 at the half.
On Saturday, Ojullo had 23 points and 10 rebounds while Rygg had 20 points and 10 rebounds. Worthington High grad Zach Hayenga contributed 16 points off the bench.
The Minnesota West men play Tuesday night at Dakota County Technical College, while the women are idle until a home game Saturday afternoon against Ridgewater.
