People for Pets aims to raise $500K for renovations, expansion

People for Pets, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit no-kill animal shelter based in Spencer, Iowa, is launching a bold capital campaign to raise $500,000 for major renovations and facility expansion. The updates will support the shelter's mission to provide high-quality care and a safe environment for animals in need across Northwest Iowa and beyond.

Founded more than 20 years ago, People for Pets began with a few passionate volunteers fostering animals in their homes. Since purchasing the current facility in 2001, the organization has provided safe shelter and compassionate care for thousands of dogs and cats. The shelter has grown to serve animals beyond Spencer across northwest Iowa into neighboring states.

With a small staff and a network of dedicated volunteers, People for Pets has continued its mission of "Saving Pets Four Paws at a Time." After decades of use, the facility's infrastructure is showing serious wear. Cracked floors, worn kennel areas, and the need for more drains and plumbing are making it increasingly difficult to maintain high standards of care and sanitation.

“This campaign isn’t just about repairs; it’s about building a future that matches the love and care we give every day. We’ve outgrown quick fixes. It’s time for meaningful, lasting changes that reflect our mission,” explained Jenna Schroer, Director at People for Pets.

To reach its $500,000 goal, People for Pets is asking individuals, local businesses, and animal lovers across the Midwest and beyond for help. Each dollar raised will contribute to creating an improved facility, building on the current foundation of care and compassion while addressing the growing needs of both the animals and the community served.
