Plenty of area playoffs games this week in boys, girls hoops

Hills-Beaver Creek, the top-seeded team from the South Subsection of Section 3A, will take on MACCRAY, the second seed for the north, at 8 p.m. Thursday at Southwest Minnesota State University for the right to go to the Minnesota State Class A girls basketball tournament.


Earlier that night, Fairmont — the second seed from the South Subsection of Section 3AA, will face No. 2 north seed Minnewaska at 5 p.m. at SMSU for a berth in the state Class AA girls basketball tourney. In Section 2AAA, meanwhile, No. 1 seed Marshall meets No. 2 New Ulm in a state-qualifying game at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter.


In boys basketball, South Subsection 3A action on Tuesday has No. 1 seed Hills-Beaver Creek up against No. 4 seed Southwest Minnesota Christian at 6 p.m. and seventh-seeded Edgerton meeting sixth-seeded Murray County Central at about 7:30 p.m. Both games will be played at Worthington High School.


In Section 3AA, top-seeded Jackson County Central will take on fourth-seeded Fairmont at 6 p.m. Tuesday and No. 2 Luverne faces No. 3 Redwood Valley at about 7:30 p.m. Both games will be played at Windom Area High School.


In Section 2AAA, the Worthington Trojans have received the No. 7 seed and will play a quarterfinal game at 7 p.m. Wednesday at No. 2 Marshall.

The Luverne Cardinals boys hockey team will begin play in the Minnesota Class A Boys Hockey Tournament on Wednesday night at the XCel Energy Center in St. Paul when they take on Hibbing-Chisholm at 6 p.m.


Luverne is the No. 8 seed in the tourney and Hibbing-Chisholm is the No. 1. The Cardinals will play at state for the second time in the past three years following a 3-2 double-overtime victory over Mankato West last week in the Section 3A title game.

Statistics posted on Minnesota Boys Hockey Hub show Maddux Domagala leading Luverne with a total of 73 points this season on 34 goals and 39 assists. Landyn Lais has scored 28 goals and passed for 37 assists for the Cardinals. Ben Hartquist has 16 goals and 39 assists.


The Cardinals have a record of 22-4-2 this season. The goaltender for a majority of their games has been Gavin Hoven, who is 18-4-2 in net with a goals-against average of 2.19 and a save percentage of 91.9%. 


Other quarterfinal games Wednesday have No. 2 St. Cloud Cathedral against No. 7 Mahtomedi at 11 a.m., No. 3 Orono against No. 6 Northfield at 1 p.m. and No. 4 East Grand Forks against No. 5 Northern Lakes at 8 p.m. The tournament continues through Saturday.
