The region’s three teams in the Minnesota state amateur baseball tournament know their opponents, times and locations for their opening games.
Fairmont, which captured the region’s No. 1 seed by beating Luverne two games to one in a playoff series last week, will play their first game at state at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 24 in Jordan. The Martins will meet the winner of an 11 a.m. Aug. 17 matchup between the Farming Flames of the Stearns County League and the Maple Lake Lakers of the North Star League.
Luverne, meanwhile, will open state tourney play at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Belle Plaine against the Kimball Express of the Central Valley League. Should the Redbirds get a victory, they’ll play the Foley Lumberjacks of the Victory League during the tournament’s second weekend at a time and location to be determined.
Also representing the region is Jackson. The Bulls, who knocked off Windom two games to one last week to earn the region’s third and final spot at state, will take on the St. Joseph Joes of the Sauk Valley League at 1:30 p.m. Sunday in Jordan. If Jackson wins, it will meet the Buffalo Bulldogs of the North Star League during the tourney’s second weekend at a time and location to be determined.
Each of the region’s teams also drafted three additional players for state. Fairmont drafted Paxton Gravlin of Fox Lake and Collin Lovell and Luke Gilbertson of Windom. Luverne drafted Tyler Maeyaert and Derek Smith of Milroy and Kobe Lovell of Windom, and Jackson drafted Tucker Sorenson of Hadley and Blake Ahrenstorff and Triston Sauerbrei of Worthington.
