Slayton police issue warning about scam

A local business recently notified the Slayton Police Department of a scam being attempted in that community.

The police department has shared an announcement from Xcel Energy that some of its customers have recently been victimized by phone scams. Callers claiming to be from Xcel Energy are threatening to turn off electricity or natural gas service if they are not paid immediately. Scammers may even manipulate Caller ID to look like they are calling from Xcel Energy.

If you feel like there is any possibility that you are dealing with an impersonator, hang up immediately and call Xcel Energy to verify the status of your account. The Slayton Police Department adds that if something sounds incorrect, contact it with questions, and it will help navigate any suspicious activity. The police department also notes that you should never give bank or personal information over the phone, and adds that if someone wants you to pay in gift cards or bitcoin, it is always a scam.
