Spirit Lake, Okoboji boys cross country teams make state

The Spirit Lake High School boys cross country team will be competing at the Iowa state meet this weekend in Fort Dodge after winning the Class 2A state qualifying meet this past Thursday in Orange City.


The Indians finished with 56 points, just ahead of Unity Christian's 57. Leading the way for Spirit Lake was Brandon Hughes, who crossed the finish line first in a time of 16:00.36. Dietrich Dirks was third, Jace Hungerford fourth, Carter Trautman 14th and Oliver Thompson 34th.


Also competing as a team at state will be Okoboji in Class 2A. The Pioneer boys placed second Thursday with 81 points at the state 2A qualifying meet in Red Oak. Charlton came out on top with 44 points.


Evan Osler's second-place finish in 17:26 led Okoboji. Also competing were: Lane Larson, seventh, Tyson Fear, 18th; Trigg Heimdal, 20th, and Owen Riphagen, 34th.

The Worthington High School girls tennis team marked the end of its season with a banquet earlier this month.


Trojans head coach Mike Marquardt noted that senior Hannah McNab was named as the team's most valuable player. Freshman Emma Hietbrink was recognized as most dedicated, as was senior Eleanor Teerink. Honored as the team's most improved player was eighth-grader Lily Brown.


Recognized with academic all-state honors was senior Mykayla Phouangphet, while McNab was chosen for the all-conference team. A total of 18 girls earned letters for their participation in tennis this past season.
