Sports Briefs for June 27, 2024

The Southwest Minnesota Volleyball 16-1 AAU team didn’t just compete at a national tournament recently – they won it.

The team captured a title in the Premier Division of the AAU National Volleyball Tournament in Orlando, Fla., capping a 12-win-and-1-loss run at the event with a 2-sets-to-1 victory in the championship match Monday. The squad won a tension-filled match by scores of 30-28, 26-28 and 15-13 to earn first place out of 147 teams in their division.

The Southwest Minnesota Volleyball 16-1 AAU team had already competed and excelled in multiple tournaments this year, but the national tourney in Orlando was an open event that was open to all interested teams. Additionally, the team – by winning the Northern Lights Qualifier in the Twin Cities this spring – earned the right to compete in another national tournament. The girls will be in Las Vegas over the Fourth of July, playing in the USA National Tournament.

Members of the team include: Jayden Spartz of Wilmont, who attends Worthington High School; Emily Nelson and Karlie Wollum of Canby High School; Abby Rolbiecki of Minneota High School; Avery Fahl and Reese Drake of Marshall High School; Taya Christensen of Russell-Tyler-Ruthton High School; Brielle Janssen and Emma Thein of MACCRAY High School. Earning all-tournament selections in Orlando were Janssen, Nelson and Drake, who was named MVP.
