The Worthington Trojans boys soccer team remained undefeated on the season Tuesday night, blanking Fairmont 4-0 in a game heard on 104.3 The Bridge.
Jonathan Banegas scored in the game’s first half as the Trojans, now ranked eighth in the state’s latest Class AA poll, led 1-0 at intermission. Banegas then booted in a shot at point-blank range just 1:48 into the second half to give WHS a 2-0 edge.
Worthington would score again later in the second half when Elmer Guzman headed in a Banegas corner kick for a 3-0 Trojans advantage. Menkem Mehri made it 4-0 when he beat Fairmont’s goalkeeper from long range with just 10 seconds remaining.
The Trojans improved to 6-0 on the year with their win over the Big South rival Cardinals, who are now 4-2-2.

In girls soccer, Worthington was on the road at Fairmont and was defeated 8-1. Sara Esquivel was credited with the Trojans’ lone goal of the game. WHS, now 1-6 on the season, will play its first home match of the season on Thursday against Loyola, a team Worthington beat to open up the year.

In high school volleyball Tuesday night, the Worthington Trojans traveled to Redwood Valley and lost a 3-0 match to the Cardinals. Game scores were 25-21, 25-22, 25-20.
Tarren Spartz led WHS offensively with eight kills and was also 12-for-12 serving, scoring six points. Ellie Weg had seven kills, three blocks and five digs. Olivia Hayenga had a team-best four blocks. Brooklyn Scheitel-Taylor was 10-of-10 serving with six points and an ace. Addison Gerber was 11-of-12 serving with five points and ace, and also passed for 21 set assists.
The Trojans will next play at Fairmont on Thursday night.

In high school girls tennis action on MONDAY, Worthington won on the road against Waseca 5-2. Marah Darling, Kessey Aljets and Bailey Newman – playing at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively -- won straight-set matches for the Trojans, as did the No. 1 doubles team of Taya Oberloh and Brooke Nordseth and the No. 3 doubles pairing of Taylor Nordseth and Hannah McNab.
