A home in rural Round Lake is likely a total loss following a fire early Sunday morning.

Round Lake Fire Department Chief Kevin Turner said Monday morning his team was paged at 3:17 a.m. Sunday to the fire, which was at a home in the 29000 block of Wass Avenue. Round Lake firefighters could see the blaze from a way off while traveling to the fire, so they quickly called the Brewster Fire Department for backup.

Round Lake firefighters immediately began attacking the blaze before Brewster arrived with mutual aid and water. The fire originated in a second-story bedroom; the home had two occupants who both got out safely.

Turner said he was very proud of his team for knocking down the fire in a very timely fashion. They were on hand until approximately 6 a.m., at which the fire was extinguished, and no hot spots were remaining.

Firefighters, however, were called back to the scene shortly after 8 a.m., he said, after flames had been spotted by neighbors. The fire had worked its way into the walls and re-sparked. Icy weather conditions made combating the blaze a challenge, and the Brewster Fire Department returned with a tanker and the Worthington Fire Department brought a tanker as well as its aerial truck.

Turner thanked Brewster and Worthington firefighters for mutual aid, as well as Al Drost and "some of his men" who came to the scene with an excavator and got the home's roof torn off. Firefighters were at the scene until nearly 1 p.m. Sunday.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
