Trojan boys excel in winning first track and field meet of season

The Worthington Trojans boys track and field team won their opening meet of the season Thursday as they finished top among six teams at the Windom Eagle Invite.
WHS had 152 points in the meet, and several Trojans earned first-place finishes on the day. Tetlouch Gach was victorious in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.91 seconds. and he also took the 300 hurdles in 44.59 seconds. Christian Kleve was first in the discus with a throw of 116 feet, three inches, Caleb Meyer won the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, two inches and Henok Ergicho took the triple jump at 37 feet, two inches.
Also getting wins for the WHS boys Thursday were the 4x100 relay team of Kevin Ramirez, Welbaka Morke, Jacari Swinea and Lucio Ramirez in a time of 46.22 and the 4x400 relay team of Isaiah Bates, Morke, Isaac Kinser and Permeye Okony in 3:43.54.
Another winner Thursday in Windom was Jackson County Central's Ben Dahlin, who got a triumph in the 400 in 52.93. The Huskies wound up third in the team standings.
In girls competition, Worthington came in third out of six teams with 71 points. Redwood Valley had 147 and JCC had 125.
Grace Bates had the only first-place finish for the Trojan girls, winning the long jump at 15-9. Madison Sieve was second in 800 and fourth in the 1600. Kenadie Thiner was fourth in the 800 and fifth in the 1600. Bates was also third in the high jump, where Bella Lazzu placed second. Lauren Nixon was third in the shot put.
Additionally, the WHS 4x200 relay team of Bates, Tiana Garcia, Cassie Schulz and Joy Knuckles took second.
For the Huskies, Rylie Cother earned wins in the 100 hurdles and the high jump. Stevie Untiedt won the 400, Naiya Ayers captured the 3200 and Payton Coquyt took the shot put.

The Worthington Trojans softball team dropped to 2-1 on the spring as it was edged at home by St. Peter 4-1.
The Saints grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but WHS knotted the
score in the bottom of the second on an RBI triple by Leah Nelson. The Saints, though, would go on to add single runs in the third, fourth and sixth.
Hannah McNab and Tayler Nickel had the only other hits for the Trojans. Bailey Ponto pitched the entire game for Worthington, surrendering eight hits while allowing just one earned run. She walked one and struck out four.
The Trojans entertain Redwood Valley Friday and host a doubleheader against Tri-City United on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m.

Meanwhile, the WHS baseball team slipped to 1-3 on the season with a 13-3 loss at St. Peter. Head coach Steve Robinson commented that he thought his squad played much better than the final score suggested. Next up for the Trojans is a twinbill at Tri-City United on Saturday.

The Minnesota West Bluejay baseball split a doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at home, losing to the Dakota State JV 13-2 and then winning 7-1. Minnesota West will take on visiting Western Technical College in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, then play two more at Western Tech on Sunday.
