Trojan boys place 1-2, girls team wins at St. James meet

Worthington’s Fanuel Wolday won the boys race and teammate Austin Kinser was second Thursday at the St. James Cross Country Invitational.

 

Wolday’s winning time was 16:54.62, which was about 21 ½ seconds faster than Kinser’s. Worthington was fourth in the five-team meet. Madelia was first, followed by Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s-Sleepy Eye and St. James; also participating was Fairmont.

 

Among others competing for WHS were Andrew Olague, who placed 22nd; Jose Chavez Vega, who was 24th; Isaac Kinser, 30th; Isaiah Bates, 31st; and Gentry Kouba, 32nd.

 

In the girls race, Madison Sieve’s fourth-place finish was best for Worthington, and Emily Dahlquist placed sixth and Claire Schultz eighth as the Trojans finished first among five teams with 39 points. Kenadie Thiner was 12th for WHS, Annabelle Hardwood 21st and Claire Mahlberg 23rd.

In high school volleyball, the Trojans picked up a 3-0 triumph Thursday night at New Ulm. Game scores were 25-17, 25-18, 25-19.

 

Jayden Spartz and Saige Scheepstra had 12 kills apiece for WHS, which improved to 8-7 overall this season. Spartz also had 10 digs and four ace serves for the Trojans. Grace Barber chipped in with eight digs and two ace serves, and Scheepstra also had a pair of aces. Natya Khamphanh passed for 25 set assists and also had a block.

 

Worthington competes Saturday at a tournament at Rochester Century.

In boys soccer Thursday, the Trojans defeated Fairmont on the road by a score of 5-2.

 

Coach Juan Flores said WHS brought a young squad over and it played well. The Trojans had the ball most of the way, he added, and they handled the match well. Flores said the team, which has a record of 9-3-2, now shifts its focus to Saturday as it hosts a tough opponent in Mankato East. The match will begin at 3 p.m.

In girls soccer, WHS was edged 2-1 by Fairmont at Trojan Field. Worthington entered the match with a 1-11 record, while Fairmont was 11-1-1.

 

The Cardinals got off to a 1-0 lead in the first half, but the Trojans tied it before the intermission on a goal by Jocelyn Thepmontry. Fairmont then got the go-ahead score in the second half.

 

Worthington will play host to Jordan at 1 p.m. Saturday.
