In a battle between the top two ranked teams in NJCAA Division III Women's Basketball, host No. 2 Rochester eked out a 57-52 win Saturday over No. 1 Minnesota West.

The Yellowjackets avenged a 64-60 loss to the Lady Jays last month in Worthington, outscoring Minnesota West 22-14 in the final quarter. Both teams struggled with shooting — Rochester shot just 34% from the floor and the Lady Jays 38% — but the Yellowjackets got 14 offensive rebounds compared to just two for their guests and committed 13 turnovers compared to 20 for Minnesota West.

Rochester got a game-high 25 points from Macaya Copeland. Rhea Tucker had 15 points and Maddie Kamm 10 for the Lady Jays, and Katrina Schutz led all players with 11 rebounds. Minnesota West is now 7-1 in MCAC South play and 15-8 overall; Rochester is 17-4 and 6-1.

The Worthington Trojans boys basketball team won for the third time in the last five games Friday night as they opened up a big lead and held on to defeat visiting Belle Plaine 84-81.

The Tigers had an 8-0 advantage a minute and half in, but the Trojans quickly tied it up at 8 on a basket by Permeye Okony and 3-pointers from Tetlouch Gach and Jacari Swinea. Belle Plaine eventually went back up by six, 22-16, but Worthington would go on a late 19-5 surge that was capped by another Gach 3 and wound up ahead 51-39 at halftime.

WHS opened up a 16-point cushion shortly after the break, but the Tigers stormed back. Trailing 70-56, Belle Plaine trimmed the deficit to 74-71 with 4:07 to go. The Trojans then moved ahead by seven, but Belle Plaine cut it down to just one with 29 seconds left. The Tigers missed a go-ahead in the waning seconds, and Swinea nailed a pair of free throws with 2.5 seconds remaining to clinch the triumph.

Worthington, now 5-17 on the season, was led offensively by Swinea's 27 points, Okony's 17, Gach's 14 and Welbaka Morke's 13.

In girls basketball Friday, the Trojans fell at Belle Plaine 77-55. The boys host Blue Earth Area on Tuesday night, while the girls play at the Bucs.
