Trojan track teams compete in Marshall meet

The Worthington Trojans boys track and field team placed third Monday in an eight-team meet in Marshall while the WHS girls wound up in sixth.


In the boys competition, the Trojans had two individuals earn first-place finishes. Permeye Okony won the triple jump and set a personal record in the process with a leap of 41 feet, nine inches. Caleb Meyer also was victorious for Worthington, taking the high jump at 6 feet, two inches.


Other top performers for the Trojans included: Christian Kleve, who was second in discus; Tetlouch Gach, second in the 110 hurdles and fifth in the 300 hurdles; Fanuel Wolday, third in the 1600 meters and fifth in the 800; and Welbaka Morke, fourth in the 100 and fifth in the triple jump.


Marshall won the meet with a total of 201 points. Redwood Valley had 139.5, and Worthington had 108.5.


For the Trojan girls, Kenadie Thiner finished second with a PR of nine feet in the pole vault, fifth in the 1600 and sixth in the 800 with a PR of 2:51.43. Lauryn Ahlers was third in the pole vault with a PR of eight feet, six inches. Bella Lazzu took third in the high jump.


Luverne took top honors among the girls teams with 171 points. WHS had 33 points.

The Minnesota West Lady Jays lost a pair of one-run games for the second time this season on Saturday when they were defeated 12-11 and 8-7 at St. Cloud Technical & Community College.


In a back-and forth opening game, St. Cloud scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh to earn the win. For Minnesota West offensively, Hannah Kazemba — who last week was recognized as the MCAC South Division Softball Position Player of the Week, connected for a triple and two singles while scoring three times and driving in a run.


Other game one leaders at bat for the Lady Jays were: Raya Van Beek, who had a single, double, three RBIs and two runs scored; Faith Kazemba, a single, double, two RBIs and a run scored; Kya Alderson, a double, two RBIs and two runs scored; Gracie Nath, two singles and an RBI; Kaia Williams, two singles and a run scored; and Maddie Petersen, a double and two runs scored.


In game two, Faith Kazemba hit a two-homer in the top of the seventh to give the Lady Jays a 7-5 lead, but St. Cloud tallied three runs in the bottom of the inning for the win. 


Alderson connected for a triple and single, scored two runs and drove in two more for Minnesota West. Hannah Kazemba had a pair of singles and scored twice. Faith Kazemba had a big day with the bat, hitting two singles and a double to go along with homer while scoring twice and driving in three. 


The Lady Jays, now 3-4, are scheduled to host Rochester in a doubleheader this afternoon starting at 3 p.m.

In college baseball Saturday, Minnesota West lost two games — both by 1-0 — to Western Technical College. 


Tristan Sauerbrei allowed just two hits in the opener for the Bluejays while walking three and striking out eight. Tucker Brandner turned in the second consecutive complete game on the mound in the nightcap, allowing three hits and an unearned run while walking three and fanning five.


Minnesota West, which had a total of just four hits in Saturday's twinbill, saw its Sunday doubleheader at Western Tech postponed due to rain. Their record after Saturday's games was 10-17.
