Trojans baseball team gains split on opening day

The Worthington Trojans opened their baseball season Thursday by splitting a pair of games at the Pentagon in Sioux Falls.


The Trojans first took on Redwood Valley and posted a 9-8 victory in a game that went eight innings. The next matchup for WHS was against Luverne, and Trojans head coach Steve Robinson said the team managed to stay with Cardinals until a chilly last couple of innings before ultimately losing 12-2.


In the opener, Manny Saravia went two-for-five at the plate for WHS with two RBIs and two runs scored. Chase Bryne had a pair of hits and drove in two runs, Dalton Larson had a hit and three RBIs and Austin Gruis a hit and two RBIs. Max Ostrem threw a pair of innings in relief. allowing one unearned run, to get the pitching win.


Saravia, Byrne, Gruis and Ostrem picked up a hit apiece in game two for the Trojans. Logan Kerkaert took the loss on the mound.


Worthington will be idle until Tuesday, when it's scheduled to play host to Marshall at 5:30 p.m. That game is slated to be broadcast on 104.3 La Voz.

The Trojans' boys tennis team also got its season underway Thursday as they took on visiting Redwood Valley. WHS, competing without its No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 singles players — two of whom are hurt — wound up being defeated 7-0 by the Cardinals. Worthington has another home meet Friday, as it is scheduled to face Montevideo at 4:30 p.m.
