The Worthington Trojans volleyball team battled from two games down to tie up their Tuesday night match with Redwood Valley, but the Cardinals rallied in game five to outlast WHS and post a 3-2 victory. Game scores were 26-24, 25-20, 26-28, 20-25, 18-16.
Redwood Valley, which improved its record to 16-5, was up 20-13 in game one, but the Trojans surged back and even earned a game point themselves at 24-23 before the Cardinals recovered. In game two, Worthington trailed 16-8 but got to within one on two occasions – the last time at 21-20 – before Redwood Valley scored the final four points,
In game three, the Trojans squandered three game points after building a 21-16 edge, but Redwood Valley also let a game point slip away before WHS finally prevailed. Kali Johnson, a key outside hitter for the Cardinals, was lost due to injury in that game and did not return.
Game four was a back-and-forth affair, and the Trojans broke free after a 16-16 tie. In game five, Worthington was on the cusp of victory, as it led 14-9 before Redwood Valley staved off multiple match points and clinched things.
Jayden Spartz had a huge match statistically for WHS as she recorded 21 kills, 26 digs and four ace serves. Saige Scheepstra had 11 kills and three aces, Natya Khamphanh contributed 46 set assists, 26 digs and three blocks, Grace Barber had 11 digs and four ace serves and Alaina Feit had six kills and four blocks. The Trojans are now 10-11.
