Trojans get home volleyball win over Luverne, 3-1

The Worthington Trojans won their Homecoming week match Thursday night against Luverne by a score of 3-1. Game scores were 25-18, 24-26, 25-20, 25-20.

The Trojans got off to a big lead in the latter stages of game one, and though Luverne fought off five game points, that wasn’t enough. Saige Scheepstra had five kills in that first game, and Jayden Spartz had four.

In game two, Luverne led by four points on two occasions and Worthington by four at another juncture. The Cardinals, down 24-21, scored the final five points.

The Trojans, who improved to 7-7 on the season, only needed a second game point to close out game three, which finished with a Spartz kill. Luverne then jumped out to a 6-0 lead in game four, but WHS recorded 12 consecutive points with Scheepstra on serve and then held off the Cardinals in the end.

Spartz finished the match with 19 kills, 25 digs and three ace serves. Scheepstra contributed 11 kills and six ace serves. Natya Khamphanh passed for 37 set assists and added 19 digs and an ace serve. Grace Barber had 11 digs and four ace serves.

In a back-and-forth boys soccer match at Trojan Field, the Marshall Tigers edged WHS 2-1 to avenge a 4-1 setback to the Trojans earlier this season.

The loss was the second in a row for Worthington, which scored first on a Danny Banegas goal. The Tigers got the equalizer on a penalty kick, and the match was tied at 1 at the half.

Marshall took advantage of the Trojans’ missed opportunities and scored the go-ahead goal with 27 minutes left. A potential tying goal by Carlos Castillo was disallowed due to a penalty box violation with seven minutes remaining, securing Marshall's win and the inside track for the Big South Conference championship. WHS is now 7-2-2 on the season.
