Trojans get late pin from Gerhard to win wrestling dual

Kasey Gerhard’s pin at 285 pounds won it for the Trojans on Thursday night as Worthington High School captured a 39-37 wrestling dual victory at Pipestone Area.


Also winning by fall for the Trojans were Oscar Galvez at 137 pounds in 1:37, Moo Bleh at 152 in 2:56, and Chase Byrne at 170 in 1:27. WHS also had a 5-3 triumph by Ethan Meyer at 145 and won two other matches via forfeit.


Worthington improved to 3-0 in dual action this season. It will next compete at an invitational meet at Jackson County Central on Saturday.

The visiting Marshall Tigers scored the game’s first eight points in less than a minute and never looked back as they went to post a 75-40 girls basketball victory over Worthington.


Ellie Weg was the lone Trojans player to score in double figures, as she had 10 points – including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer right before halftime. Tarren Spartz had nine points, and Pham Gora contributed seven.


In the rebounding department, it was Weg with seven and Spartz with six. Madison Beckmann passed for four assists and Spartz three.


For Marshall, which was playing in just its first game of the season, Brianna Simpson had 25 points and Lexie Bednarek 13. WHS is now 1-3 on the year.
