Trojans softball squad tops Marshall to move to 2-0

The Worthington Trojans softball team won on the road Tuesday for the second time in two games, topping Marshall 13-8 after rallying for eight runs in the top of the seventh inning.


WHS had 12 hits in the game, including three apiece from the first two hitters in the batting order — Bailey Ponto and Madi Polz. Hannah McNab contributed two more hits for the Trojans, including her second home run in as many games.


Polz added a pair of RBIs in the triumph and Ponto earned the pitching win with a complete-game effort, walking one batter and striking out 11. Four of Marshall's eight runs were unearned.


The 2-0 Trojans will be busy at home the rest of the week. They'll host St. Peter on Thursday, Redwood Valley in a makeup game Friday and Tri-City United in a doubleheader Saturday.

The WHS baseball team played its first home game of the season Tuesday night and was defeated 12-2 in five innings by Marshall.


The Tigers collected 10 hits on the night against Trojan pitching and limited Worthington to just three. Austin Gruis, Dominic Pavelko and Anthony Quintanilla each had singles for the home team.


Chase Byrne started on the mound for WHS and took the pitching loss. The Trojans scored both their runs on the bottom of the fifth thanks to Quintanilla's single, an RBI groundout by Pavelko and a wild pitch.


Worthington is now 1-2 this spring and will next play Thursday at St. Peter.

The Worthington Trojans girls golf team won its dual meet Tuesday at Luverne, coming in with a team score of 218 compared to 237 for the Cardinals.


Senior Claire Mahlberg of WHS wound up with the low score of the day, as she finished with a round of 48. Ingrid Mostad of Luverne was four shots back at 52.


Other Trojans competing Tuesday included: Claire Meyer and Jayden Spartz, who each recorded scores of 56; Callie Rosenberg, who had a 58; and Peyton Nickel, who shot a 60.


In boys golf. it was host Luverne defeating Worthington by a score of 178-207. Cardinals sophomore Will Bergman had the day's lowest round at 42, and senior teammate Levi Gonnerman was right behind at 43.


For Worthington, it was senior Spenser Nickel leading the way with a 47. Also competing for the Trojans were: Ayden Stugelmeyer, 52; Brody Pederson, 53; Ben Mahlberg. 54; Tyson Petersen, 55; and Gerrit Larson, 57.


The Worthington boys will host a multi-team tournament on Friday, while the girls are idle until next Tuesday when they host a dual meet against Western Christian.
