Two Bluejay wrestlers place in Worthington Open

he Minnesota West wrestling team wound up with a pair of placers on Saturday as the Bluejays hosted the Worthington Open.


At 174, freshman Sam Rock of Luverne placed fourth. Rock's first match was a win by fall in 4:10 against Evan Newman of Iowa Central, and he then won by technical fall over Braden Gissal of Iowa Lake Community College. Next for Rock was a 7-5 victory over Kaleb Bigelow of Dakota Wesleyan; he then was defeated by Cole Glazier of St. Cloud State by technical fall. Dominic Mann of St. Cloud State then edged Rock in the third-place match, 11-8.


At 197, Bluejay freshman Alex Schmitz of Little Falls ended up taking sixth. Schmitz won his first match by forfeit, then lost by before winning his next match by forfeit and next blanking Asa Adams of Briar Cliff 10-0. He was then pinned by Michael Murillo of the University of Mary in the fifth-place match.


Minnesota West wrestlers will be on the road this weekend for a multi-team event in Willmar. The Bluejays are scheduled to take on -- in succession — Rochester, Northland, Bismarck State, Minnesota North-Itasca and Ridgewater. The action is slated to begin at 10 a.m.


After that, the Bluejays will host two more events in Worthington. Minnesota West will meet St. John's University on Feb. 9 and then be a site for the Region 13 national qualifier on Feb. 23.

The Worthington Trojans scored four times in the first period Monday night and added three more goals in the second as the WHS boys hockey team defeated visiting Redwood Valley, 7-3.


Dominic Pavelko scored at 11:09 of the opening period, with assists credited to Spenser Nickel and Mason Ommen, to put the Trojans up 1-0. Trenton Chantharath got a goal at 13:48 on an assist from Nickel, and Lucas Hohenstein scored at 15:56 on assists from Onnen and Pavelko, making it 3-0 in favor of WHS. Anthony Jimenez tallied the fourth goal of the period unassisted at 16:21.


Ommen scored twice and Hohenstein once for the Trojans in the second period. Nickel assisted on Ommen's first goal, Ommen assisted on Hohenstein's goal and Pavelko and Nickel fed Ommen for his second score. 


Monday marked the second time Worthington has defeated Redwood Valley this season in two tries. The Trojans, now 5-13 on the year, outshot the Cardinals 42-35. WHS goalkeeper Tyson Peterson had 32 saves.
