WHS boys hoops snaps skid, tops New Ulm

The Worthington Trojans boys basketball team broke a seven-game losing streak Tuesday night as they earned a 78-66 victory over New Ulm in the WHS gym.

The Trojans got off to a solid start and had a 15-8 lead when New Ulm called a timeout with about four and half minutes gone by. Caleb Meyer and Treyson Meinders each had quick 3-pointers after that, and Worthington went up 25-14 before the Eagles started to crawl closer. New Ulm was able to draw within 29-24, but the Trojans closed out the opening half on a 14-2 surge for a 43-26 advantage at the break.

In the second half, the Trojans opened up a cushion of two dozen and led 66-42 with 9:08 to go. New Ulm went on an 8-0 run, but Permeye Okony's dunk broke the Worthington drought. The Eagles then drew to within 70-57, but the Trojans answered with six consecutive points — the last two on another Okony slam.

Jacari Swinea led WHS with 24 points, with 15 of those coming in the first half. Four other players scored in double figures as Isaiah Schoeder contributed 18 points, Meyer added 14 points, and Okony and Meinders scored 11 each. The Trojans are now 2-8 on the season — the same as New Ulm.

It was a difficult night Tuesday for the Trojan hockey teams as the girls' and boys' squads both lost in Marshall.

In the girls game, the Tigers improved to 17-1-1 on the season by routing Worthington by a score of 13-0. Brooklyn Mauch set the tone for the home team early by scoring the first of her four goals on the night just 42 seconds into the game. Marshall dominated on both ends of the ice as it outshot WHS by a margin of 47-5. The Trojans now have a record of 3-10.

In the boys matchup, the Tigers took care of Worthington by a score of 7-1. Evan Bumgardner scored the lone WHS goal on an assist from Anthony Jimenez. The Trojan boys, who were outshot 45-18, are 3-10 as well.
