WHS boys soccer, girls VB come away with victories

Jonathan Banegas scored a pair of goals and assisted on a third as the Worthington boys soccer team topped visiting New Prague 3-1 on Saturday.


Banegas broke free from the New Prague defense less than four minutes into the match and beat goalkeeper Sean Christensen one-on-one for a 1-0 WHS edge. After Satchel Johnson got New Prague even on a penalty kick, Banegas scored on a penalty shot of his own and Worthington led 2-1 at the half. Banegas connected with Andy Guzman for a close-range goal in the latter stages of the second half. Kaleb Knothe also boosted the Trojans with multiple saves in net.

In girls soccer, it was Mankato Loyola over visiting Worthington, 5-2. Cristy Bangeas and Sara Esquivel had goals for the Trojans, who picked up their game during the match’s second half.

The WHS girls volleyball team cruised past St. James by game scores of 25-18, 25-19, 25-10. Jayden Spartz had 15 kills, nine digs and three ace serves for the Trojans. Madison Beckmann had five kills, nine digs, three blocks and three ace serves as Worthington improved to 1-1.

The Minnesota West Lady Jays went 4-0 over four matches Friday and Saturday at a crossover women’s volleyball tournament at Anoka-Ramsey.


Minnesota West beat Itasca 3-0 in its first match of the weekend, then beat Alexandria 3-1 and NIACC 3-1 in its next matches before blanking Rainy River 3-0 to close out the day.


Ella Hesse paced the Lady Jays offense with 55 kills over the course of the four matches. Kat Polzine led the way in the serving department with 12 aces. Shanwa Rogers had a total of 63 digs, and Lexi Schreurs passed for a combined 105 set assists.


The matches marked the first action of the year for Minnesota West. The Ladyjays will host Ellsworth Community College in a non-conference match at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
