WHS gets volleyball, boys soccer victories

The Worthington Trojans volleyball team improved to 3-1 on the season Tuesday night by topping visiting Fairmont 3-1. Game scores were 25-22, 22-25, 25-20, 25-22.

 

The Trojans trailed 22-19 in the first game but scored the final six points to grab a 1-0 lead in the match. After falling in game two, WHS went up 10-1 in game 3, only to see Fairmont claw back to within 12-11. The Trojans then surged back ahead 20-11, but Fairmont fought back again only to come up short.

 

The Trojans then took game four and were buoyed by a big night from Saige Scheepsta, who wrapped up her night with 19 kills and three blocks. Jayden Spartz added 15 kills, 16 digs, three blocks and two aces. Lauren Nixon was strong behind the service line, finishing with five aces – including two key aces in the final stages of game one.

 

Natya Khamphanh passed for 39 set assists and had three aces for WHS. Other contributors were Kamryn Olson, who had a team-high 19 digs and an ace serve, and Grace Barber, with two ace serves.

 

The Trojans next play Thursday at Jackson County Central.

In girls tennis Tuesday, Marshall defeated visiting Worthington 6-1. The Trojans got their lone triumph at No .4 singles, as Eleanor Teerink posted a 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 win. All of the WHS losses came in straight sets with the exception of No. 3 singles, where Sadie Nickel was edged 6-7, 6-0, 10-7. Worthington competes Thursday at St. James.

The Worthington Trojans boys soccer team improved to 4-0-1 on the fall Tuesday night with a convincing 4-1 win over the Marshall Tigers.

 

The Trojans controlled the first half, taking a commanding 2-0 lead into halftime. WHS added two more scores in the second 45 minutes and played strong defense throughout in dropping the arch-rival Tigers to 2-2 on the season.

 

Carlos Castillo netted two goals for Worthington, and Andy Guzman and Danny Banegas each contributed a goal apiece. Trojans coach Juan Flores stated that he was satisfied with the team's performance, praising its ability to step up and maintain momentum. He also praised Emmanuel Saravia, the first-year starting goalie, for his confidence and impressive saves.

 

Worthington will play at St. James on Thursday.
