WHS girls soccer team gets its first 2024 victory

The Worthington High girls soccer team won its first match of the fall Tuesday night as they earned a victory on the road against St. James/Windom/Madelia – or Wings United --- 5-1.

 

Sahrya Talamantes and Jocelyn Thepmontry each tallied a pair of goals and Yoselin Perez-Ramos also scored as the team picked up its initial triumph for first-year head coach Josue Hernandez. He said the Trojans began passing more last game and continued to do so this match while showing a better understanding of his vision for the team. Hernandez added that he’s proud of his squad, which will next host Fairmont on Thursday.

In boys soccer, Worthington snapped a three-match losing streak with a lopsided 11-0 win over Wings United.

 

Andy Guzman led the scoring with three goals. He was supported by two goals each from Daniel Henríquez, Isaac Pérez and Carlos Castillo, and single goals from Danny Banegas and Welbaka Morke.

 

Coach Juan Flores said the team adjusted well to some formation changes and demonstrated strong ball movement. WHS, now 8-3-2, plays at Fairmont on Thursday.

In a high school volleyball match heard on 104.3 La Voz, visiting Adrian-Ellsworth defeated Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda 3-1 at Fulda High School. Game scores were 25-18, 24-26, 25-22, 25-23.

 

The Dragons led by 13-7 in game one and were able to grow that advantage after the Coyotes trimmed the deficit to just two. In game two, Heron-Lake-Okabena/Fulda went up 18-9, but the Dragons roared back and took a 20-19 edge before the Coyotes regrouped and ultimately prevailed.

 

A-E went on to win a back-and-forth game three and then held on in game four after the Coyotes earned six straight points to force a 21-21 tie. The Dragons are now 4-5 on the season; Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda is 5-11.

Murray County Central/Fulda’s Mara Clarke and Worthington’s Fanuel Wolday were the individual winners Tuesday afternoon in the MCC/Fulda Invitational at the Slayton Golf Club.

 

Wolday won with a time of 16 minutes, 27 seconds and prevailed by 50 seconds over second-place Evan Baumgardner of the Warriors. Matthew Stapek was sixth for MCC/Fulda; the Trojans’ Austin Kinser was seventh.

 

MCC/Fulda won the team boys competition with 46 points, just ahead of Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey’s 47. Alexander Betz and Aiden Appel each aided the Warriors with 10th and 11th place finishes, respectively. Worthington, which came in third with 78 points, had Isaac Kinser place 22nd and Jose Chavez Vega 25th. Adrian-Ellsworth, which took sixth as a team, was led by Darwin Demarrias-Jansma, who was ninth.

 

In the girls race, Clarke’s time of 20:32 was five seconds ahead of Katie Johnson of Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey. Cora Pauling of Jackson County Central was fifth and teammate Naiya Ayers was 10th. MCC/Fulda’s Sophia Nelson was seventh.

 

Springfield/Cedar Mountain was first among teams with 47 points; Murray County Central/Fulda was second at 66. Worthington, Adrian-Ellsworth and Jackson County Central were fourth, fifth and sixth, in that order.

 

Olivia Bullerman came in 11th to lead the Dragons and Keyona Klingenberg was 19th.  Madison Sieve crossed the line first for the Trojans in 16th place. Emily Dahlquist, Claire Schultz and Kenadie Thiner were 21st, 22nd and 23rd, respectively.

In high girls tennis Monday afternoon, Fairmont topped visiting Worthington 5-2.

 

The Trojans got both of their wins in doubles competition, The No. 2 tandem of Eleanor Teerink and Kah Blu Moo triumphed by scores of 7-5 , 6-4 and the No. 3 duo of Ashley Esparza and Tiana Garcia won 6-3 , 2-6 , 10-7 .


The Trojan girls returned to courts Tuesday and lost away from home to New Prague 6-1, The lone win for WHS was at No. 1 doubles, where Hannah McNab and Emma Hietbrink won 6-0, 6-3. Worthington just missed a victory at No. 3 doubles, at which Angie Dailey and Cassie Schulz were edged 2-6, 6-2, 11-9.
