A scholarship presentation program took place last week at Worthington High School to recognize senior Alondra Leon Flores.

Flores was awarded the President’s Regional Scholars Award, which is given to four high-achieving high school seniors and provides full-ride scholarships to Southwest Minnesota State University in Marshall. The full-ride scholarship is for four years and will start with Flores's beginning of her academic career at SMSU in the fall semester of 2025. The students are selected through a combination of their outstanding academic achievements, as well as interviews with SMSU faculty and staff and an individual interview with SMSU's president.

Flores was also awarded the top forensics (speech) scholarship at SMSU next year. She has participated in speech in Worthington since her eighth-grade year, competing in original oratory, in which she writes her own persuasive speech.

During Flores’s three years as a BPA member, she has been a chapter and regional officer all three years, competed at all levels of competition including regional, state and national, and has been a national torch ambassador. Flores will be a BPA State competitor in March in Administrative Support Research Project and Admin Support Team while also earning her statesman torch award. Finally, in May, she will be recognized at this year’s BPA NLC in Orlando, Fla., for earning her second National Ambassador Torch Award.
