Windom Area High School's football and soccer teams will play their home games on the school track’s interior during the fall 2024 season. It's a short-term plan that the district believes will give its students the best opportunity in this difficult time after June flooding damaged Island Park.
There have been multiple steps identified as necessary to transition the track into a makeshift football field. Among them are the removal of long jump, triple jump, high jump and pole vault areas inside the track, which will be done in a manner that does not damage the track and damages the least amount of existing grass.
Fill will be hauled in and ground prepared for the laying down of new sod in the areas where the field events were previously located. The sod would then be placed and the field irrigated, and volunteers will be sought for this part of the project.
Island Park's goal posts will be moved to campus, or new goal posts will be installed. Portable bleachers will be placed to ensure there are adequate spectator bleachers. Two large sets of portable bleachers usually used at Island Park will be utilized.
The high jump, long jump, triple jump, and pole vault events will be reinstalled on an area outside of the track in a location chosen by the district. This would be completed this fall to be ready for the track and field student athletes to use in the spring.
