An annual community event that has been taking place for almost 40 years will be hosted again this year, even though its longtime organizer died in May.
Worthington's Community Thanksgiving Dinner, as per tradition, will be hosted at noon Thanksgiving Day at First Lutheran Church.
After the death of Terry Morrison, it was uncertain if the annual dinner would be continued, However, Tammy Makram, the managing director at Worthington's Memorial Auditorium Performing Arts Center, recently stepped forward to help lead the way. Makram has since been working with Morrison's daughter, Jada Walker — who herself has been involved with the event for many years — and Rev. Jeanette McCormick of First Lutheran Church on coordinating the event.
There is currently a need for volunteers on Nov. 27 to assist with cooking as well as setting up tables and chairs. Volunteers are also being sought for Thanksgiving Day for serving food, carving the turkeys and cleanup.
There will be turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy and multiple desserts at the dinner, which is open to everyone. There will be a free-will offering at the event.
To make donations or volunteer, people may text or call Tammy at (507) 227-7010 or Jada at (507) 380-3704. Financial donations can be dropped off from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Nov. 27 and starting at 8 a.m. Nov. 28, or VENMO @Jada-Walker-10. People may also donate to costs associated with food preparation and groceries by contacting McCormick at (612) 636-1533
If you know someone who needs a meal delivery to their home, stop by the church at noon on Nov. 28 and a "grab and go" box will be made for you to bring to them. The church is located at 1200 Fourth Ave., Worthington.
