The Worthington American Legion baseball team bounced back from a doubleheader loss on Sunday and blanked Heron Lake 10-0 in five innings Monday night at the Worthington Middle School field.
Max Ostrem pitched all five innings for the home team, allowing just one hit while striking out nine batters. Mathias Noble paced the offense by going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIS. Austin Gruis went 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs, and Tucker Brandner and Ostrem each had a hit while driving in a run.
The victory came a day after Worthington was swept in a doubleheader by host St. James, 3-0 and 9-0, on Sunday.
Gruis was 2-for-3 hitting in the first game, while Chase Byrne, Noble and Manny Saravia contributed one hit each. Brandner went 2-for-3 in the second contest. Worthington was plagued in both contests by coming up empty in multiple scoring opportunities.
Worthington, now with a record of 3-4, will play Windom at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in a game moved to Lakefield due to flooding at Windom’s Island Park. Worthington also plays in a tournament at Rochester this weekend. Games at Rochester Century High School are against Renner, S.D., at 5 p.m. Friday as well as North St. Paul and Rochester Century at 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Saturday, respectively. There will be a matchup to be determined on Sunday as well.
